5th March, 2016 (A weekly ritual)

by Brendan Strong

Clean, coffee, (I am here) clean, coffee,
Clean, coffee, clean, coffee,
Clean, coffee, clean, coffee.
Beer, a steak, red wine.

Putting the time in
To get the shine back
And remove the dog hairs,
Children’s spills, that stain
You can feel under foot
But cannot see.

Clean, coffee, clean, coffee,
Clean, coffee, (I am here) clean, coffee,
Clean, coffee, clean, coffee.
Beer, a steak, red wine.

Bathrooms. Jesus. A week of toothpaste
IEDs detonated in the sink –
Solid blobs of near unshiftable pink.
Polishing taps until you can see
Your face as Picasso might paint it.

Clean, coffee, clean, coffee,
Clean, coffee, clean, coffee,
Clean, coffee, (I am here) clean, coffee.
Beer, a steak, red wine.

The teddies in the children’s rooms
Are staging some kind of sit in –
#occupydomesticity, hiding
A multitude of hidden-food sin,
But the rooms can be reclaimed again.

The rooms can be reclaimed again
To make the house a home again
For the first few days
Until you feel it underfoot
An invisible children’s spill again.
