January 2, 2016 Sonnet
by Brendan Strong
A slingshot: the sling stretched back as far as
It will go. The missile inside trembles with
A hand twitch. The new year is here as large as
Looming life. Two days to the holiday’s finish.
We twitch with the time in our hands and what
To do with it. Panicking for activity
In slow motion. Stretching our thinking but
Limiting choices. Dormancy is our captivity
Until – out of the blue – at last! An errand:
We are called to Carlow to drop in some things.
We start slow: not the slingshot apparent,
Bumbling to the car where Taylor Swift still sings.
I beg them to let me change the station,
They refuse, and remind me how they’ve been patient.
