Tom Waits Covers: Bruce Springsteen Covers Jersey Girl

by Brendan Strong

Sorry it’s only one of those crappy still video, but any of the live versions I could find were home recordings, with people talking over them.

The proto Downtown Train. Bruce made the song his own and handed it over to people as an anthem. He makes a real story of it, and his anthem sense makes it easy for everyone to attach something to it. It is spine tingling to hear thousands of people call Sha la la lala laaaaa. I think nearly everyone I know (including me) thought he wrote it.

Here’s a duet I found with Bruce and Tom (dodgy sound quality):

And a Pearl Jam cover, recommended by my friend Gwen, which is pretty sweet (but does sound like a cover of the Springsteen version, sorry Gwen).
