Broken Sonnet for a Bending Soul
by Brendan Strong
So the battle continues with the “to-do” list.
To paper and spreadsheets, adding ticks and circles
Codes for completion: “executed” or “missed”
More of the latter means payment’s less certain.
Deadlines come rolling: sisyphic boulders
Down hills made of Ghant charts and coloured-in squares
A hero entrenched by project folders
“Home by Christmas – (if we ever get there)!”
Then driving then stopped for ninety minutes
Playing with traffic: crazy lanes in the rain
Even the radio is in low spirits
About nothing working for which no one’s to blame
The children have been waiting patiently with their toys
Tired, but there’s time: After all, it’s all for this precious joy.
